Please join us in congratulating Saribel Barrientos, mentored by Dr. Chiavaccini, on the successful presentation of her FVSP student project, titled “Toward Automated Recognition of Equine Postoperative Pain: Building a Standardized Behavioral Video Dataset!”
Saribel’s research focuses on developing a standardized behavioral video dataset to support artificial intelligence (AI)-based recognition of postoperative pain in horses. Her project uses objective behavioral annotations to compare surgical and non-surgical horses before and after anesthesia, with the goal of distinguishing anesthesia-related behaviors from true indicators of postoperative pain.
This important work has the potential to improve the accuracy and consistency of equine pain assessment while contributing to the growing use of technology and objective measures in veterinary medicine.
Through her work on this project, Saribel has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing equine pain research and improving animal welfare. As an aspiring mixed-animal veterinarian, she hopes to combine clinical practice with research to advance evidence-based medicine and improve the health and welfare of animals across species.
