Congratulations to our PIRL members for their participation in Phi Zeta this year:
- Dr. Manraj Grewal won Best in Show for the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences with her presentation, “Assessing the Analgesic Efficacy of Encapsulated Kratom in Altering Sensory Thresholds in Dogs, using Electric, Thermal, and Mechanical Quantitative Sensory Testing.”
- Dr. Ankita Gupta competed in the Interns/Resident poster competition with her project, “Postoperative Pain Phenotypes in Dogs Undergoing Abdominal Surgery.”
- Dr. Lizeth Montano Garibay, mentored by Dr. Erin Miscioscia and PIRL adjacent, Dr. Montalbano, received third place in the Intern/Resident poster competition with her project, “Use of interferential electrotherapy (IFC) in managing post- surgical pain in patients with hemilaminectomy due to acute intervertebral disc disease.”
- Roman Mirra, DVM student, mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell, earned third place in the DVM Student Best Top Dog Oral Presentations for “Evaluation of Commercial Kratom Urine Test: Inability to Detect 7-Hydroxymitragynine and Cross-Reactivity with Kratom Compounds.”
- Fiona Heckler, DVM student, also mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell, received third place in the DVM student poster competition for her project, “The Influence of Gabapentin and Amantadine on Altering Sensory Thresholds in Dogs.”
- Ashley Gunter, DVM student, mentored by Dr. Ludo Chiavaccini, competed in the DVM student poster competition with her project, “The Impact of Ketamine on Opioid Administration and Pain Trajectories in Dogs Undergoing Orthopedic Surgeries.”
- Dr. Diego Portela was awarded the FVMA Clinical Investigator Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions as an established investigator advancing clinical veterinary medicine.
