In Loving Memory of KJ

Our Gentle Guardian 2016–2025

KJ, our incredible German Shepherd, blessed our family for nine unforgettable years. I’ll admit, I was the skeptic at first, convinced he would be too much dog for our home. Thankfully, I was outvoted, and he remains one of the greatest gifts our family ever had.

What can be said about our sweet KJ?

He was the biggest pup in the litter with an even bigger heart. His instincts were something I could never have imagined. He patrolled the fenceline like it was his life’s mission. On the trail, he always knew where each one of us was, constantly checking, constantly protecting. He never needed a command repeated, stood calmly at our side without a leash, and showed an unwavering loyalty.

KJ had a joyful, playful spirit that matched his noble presence. He loved chasing balls with laser focus, and no hike or walk was complete until he found his stick,  always the perfect one, always chosen with purpose, even if it was far too big for a normal dog to carry. Sometimes that meant proudly marching home with a 4×4. He also sang backup with us, adding his own voice to our family in the way only he could. And with those deep, wise eyes, he could look straight into your soul.

KJ wasn’t just a dog; he was a guardian, a companion, our steady shadow, and a piece of our hearts.

We are eternally grateful for the love, protection, and joy he brought into our lives. Until we meet again, we will hold him close in our hearts and treasure every memory he gave us.

We also want to express our deep appreciation to the University of Florida for their dedication to researching and finding cures for the cancers that take our precious animals too soon. Thank you for fighting for those with no voice.

Run free, KJ. You were, and always will be, our good boy.” – Stacie Kittman

We at the Pain Innovations Research Laboratory are deeply grateful for the generosity of KJ’s family and for allowing his legacy to live on through his remarkable contributions to science and education. His gift will help advance research, inspire learning, and make a lasting difference in the lives of both animals and people. May he rest in peace.
