We are proud to share the outstanding accomplishments of our Pain Innovation and Research Laboratory (PIRL) team at this year’s Phi Zeta Research Day! All PIRL members were well represented, with Dr. Manraj Grewal, Dr. Raiane Moura, and research assistant April Hardison all competing in poster presentations. In addition, second-year veterinary student Roman Mirra competing in the Top Dog Oral Presentation competition for his study evaluating over-the-counter human urine test kits for detecting kratom metabolites in canine urine, and PIRL adjacent second year student Emily Erdman competing in Top Dog for her study on quantitative sensory testing in bearded dragons.

We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Grewal and Roman both took home second place prizes in their respective categories — a true testament to their hard work, innovation, and dedication to advancing veterinary science! Furthermore, Emily won first place for her research, mentored by Dr. Ludovica Chiavaccini. Finally, Dr. Grewal also took home the first Pain Innovation Research Lab award for her commitment to research excellence!
Adding to the excitement, Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell was honored with the C.E. Cornelius Young Investigator Award, which recognizes outstanding early-career faculty who have made significant contributions to research. Dr. Maxwell’s leadership and groundbreaking work in translational pain research continue to drive the mission of PIRL forward, and we are so proud of her well-deserved recognition.

Congratulations to our entire team for representing PIRL with excellence and passion!
